Quixote Transportation Technologies (QTT) has released a new mobile weather sensor – the Surface Patrol® HD. The Surface Patrol HD detects pavement temperature, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point. The sensor gives real-time data and provides more atmospheric and pavement readings than any other mobile sensor available in the transportation industry.
The Surface Patrol HD provides a distinct advantage for decision-makers because the atmospheric data and the pavement temperature data from the sensor allows them to monitor for frost or black ice. Frost and black ice are very dangerous winter road conditions because they are difficult for drivers to see. The real-time data from the Surface Patrol HD supplies maintenance personnel with valuable data along their route so they can appropriately manage and keep roadways safe for travelers.
The Surface Patrol HD consists of an infrared pavement temperature sensor contained in a protective cone and an atmospheric sensor for capturing air temperature, relative humidity and dew point readings. These sensors attach to a fleet or management vehicle and provide valuable data along the driver’s route. The Surface Patrol HD is quick and easy to install, and the data is displayed on an easy-to-read, dash-mounted digital display. In addition, the infrared pavement temperature sensor can be calibrated in the field allowing the sensor to be used longer and removing the hassle of returning it to the manufacturer for maintenance.
Additional benefits of the Surface Patrol HD include the ability to integrate with an AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) system as well as provide accurate weather data for paint striping, weed spraying or chip sealing.
