Emergency Turnaround Warning System

The Emergency Turnaround Warning System is a synchronized group of components designed to automatically alert traffic to the presence of an emergency or maintenance vehicle entering the highway from a designated crossover. The system is intended to make roadways safer by alerting motorists in advance of vehicles turning onto the roadway. Lights and sirens may get their attention, but the addition of signs and flashing beacons provides extra notification, and ultimately protection, for both motorists and emergency or maintenance personnel.

The Emergency Turnaround Warning System utilizes permanent, in-ground vehicle detection sensors to identify the presence of vehicles in a crossover area. Flashing beacons are then activated on strategically placed message signs to notify travelers that an emergency or maintenance vehicle is turning around ahead.

Wireless spread spectrum RF communication links are used for activation/de-activation of the flashing beacons. Once a vehicle is detected the beacons can remain flashing until manually deactivated, or a pre-programmed timeout is executed. The system can also accommodate notification to selected personnel via email or pager.
