Pavement Sensors

Agencies around the world use pavement sensors to monitor remote locations, bridges, known problem areas, airport parking facilities, even runways. Knowing the pavement temperature and condition results in more proactive and efficient maintenance operations.

Pavement information is essential for operations during critical winter periods and throughout the year. As weather conditions change, pavement conditions can deteriorate quickly. Pavement sensors provide the data you need to make informed and timely decisions. QTT offers a variety of pavement sensors to fit your needs and budget.

Benefits

  • Accurately measure pavement temperature and condition
  • Collect pavement data at specific locations
  • Provide essential data for proactive anti-icing operations
  • Reduce overall chemical usage and save money
  • Reduce harmful environmental effects
  • Year-round applications

thermo-Q™

Pavement temperature is an important variable to measure during winter weather events and helps decision-makers determine when pavements will freeze. QTT's thermo-Q provides a non-intrusive solution for measuring pavement temperature. The thermo-Q uses infrared technology to accurately measure pavement temperature and provides stationary, single target monitoring. QTT also offers a cutting-edge design of the thermo-Q with adjustable features (pan and tilt) and the ability to measure multiple surface temperatures. This version is known as the thermo-Q 360.

The thermo-Q is a smart alternative to an invasive sensor that requires lane closures and cutting of the roadway. The thermo-Q is easy to install and has low maintenance requirements; maintenance personnel can be safely on the side of the road while installing or maintaining it. The sensor has the ability to be mounted on an existing road weather station or other structure where a clear, unobstructed view of the pavement is available.

terra-Q™

Non-intrusive sensors are gaining popularity as traffic volumes increase on our nation’s highways.  It is becoming imperative that agencies collect roadway data without disrupting traffic flow.  The terra-Q sensor is ideal for providing essential pavement condition data.  The sensor measures the surface condition from the side of the road and is an excellent substitute to intrusive sensor technology, especially for customers who need to retrieve valuable pavement data from known “trouble zones”; roadway configurations that include sharp corners; or bridge structures where intrusive sensors cannot be located due to structural design issues.

The terra-Q sensor utilizes an electro-optical sensor to detect pavement conditions, eliminating the need to install a sensor in the roadway surface.  The terra-Q sensor requires minimal maintenance, which reduces costs and safety concerns for agencies.

A unique feature of the terra-Q is its windshield wiper and fluid, which helps it maintain a clear view.  This feature keeps the lens clear from road contaminants and allows for accurate reporting of pavement conditions.  Further, the terra-Q sensor can be used with an existing Road / Runway Weather Information System (RWIS) network.

FP 2000®

Scheduling winter storm crews, construction projects or pavement resurfacing is easier if you know the current conditions. The FP 2000 passive surface sensor monitors pavement conditions on roadways and runways and determines if water or a chemical solution is on the pavement.

The FP 2000 is durable, reliable and constructed to withstand heavy traffic, tire chains, snowplows and extreme weather conditions. The in-pavement sensor utilizes patented technology consisting of a combination of temperature, capacitance and two sets of four-point sensing nodes to measure pavement conditions. A well on top of the sensor collects moisture and chemical information.

Sensit®

The Sensit is an active and passive pavement sensor combined; it measures current road surface temperature, the freeze point of any liquid on the road surface and determines whether the road is wet or dry. The Sensit uses active sensor technology, which means it cools the liquid on the pavement to determine the freeze point. This method is carried out independent of chemical type or mixture on the pavement.

The Sensit's removable lid allows for easy access to all electronics and sensing components, making upgrading or replacing sensing components quick and easy. This approach allows for lower long-term maintenance costs.

The Sensit provides data for successful road weather management, and is even designed to integrate with RWIS or fixed anti-icing spray systems.

Groundhog®

The Groundhog is a wireless, permanent traffic and weather sensor that accurately detects vehicle count, speed and classification data. The sensor also measures pavement temperature, wet / dry status and chemical index. It collects data without any external sensors, loops or tubes, and easily integrates with RWIS (Road / Runway Weather Information System) sites. The Groundhog provides on-going traffic monitoring for studies or ITS applications.

Thermo SCAN

The Thermo SCAN is a passive pavement sensor made of the same durable material as the FP 2000, but is designed to measure temperature only. The in-pavement sensor is easy to install and provides a low cost solution for gathering pavement data.

The Thermo SCAN sensor uses a thermo-linear network to measure pavement temperature; the resistance of the thermo-linear network increases with decreasing temperature. This method of pavement temperature measuring is simple, yet highly accurate.

Sub-Surface

The surface temperature of a pavement is strongly affected by the pavement and soil temperatures below the surface. The sub-surface temperature probe typically measures temperature 17 inches below the roadway surface.

Sub-surface probes are used to determine frost-depth, assist in predicting the pavement surface temperature and can be utilized in pavement forecasting. Similar to the Thermo SCAN, the sub-surface probe uses a thermo-linear network to measure temperature, providing accurate data readings.
